Why book this tour: The only bat watching tour on the Island, this tour is a different way to spend one of your holiday nights and perceive the Island’s night landscapes. The observation is made on the central mountains area, where the rare Madeira pipistrelles are easy to observe. Further down on our second spot, we might watch Kuhl’s pipistrelles and Madeira lesser noctules. The tour is led by a biologist or naturalist guide with ultrasound equipment allowing us to hear the echolocation calls. Areas and Localities: The tour takes place on the central area of the Island, starting at the central mountain’s summit, and then follows to the old mountain road to S. Vicente to our second observation spot. Target Species: Madeiran Pipistrelles, Madeiran lesser noctule, kuhl’s pipistrelles, Grey long-eared bats. Sighseeing:A unique opportunity to observe the night vistas of the south central areas between Funchal and Ribeira Brava and northern area of S. Vicent valley.

Tour Tips: Warm clothes, comfortable outdoor shoes. Polar fleece and windbreaker jackets are advised. Please mind that the bat watching takes place at 1000 meters above sea level and windy northern areas Vertigo & Claustrophobia: There is no vertigo or claustrophobia. The tour has short walks on wide paths or observation spots. Wc Stop & Coffee Break: No, because on this area of the Island everything is closed. There is no coffee break. Tea is offered by the guide during the observation. If needed toilets are available at a gas station in Ribeira Brava after the second observation spot on the way back to the hotel.
