The Atouguia Church is located in Lombo do Atouguia, Calheta. This church was built year 1783. The Atouguia Church boasts the only relic of John Paul II on the island of Madeira, canonized saint by the Catholic Church in April 2014. Under the altar, a tombstone holds a silver box where are three white-haired John Paul II with Vatican authenticity certification. Because the Parochial Atouguia Church is, from now on, an important attraction pole in the religious tourism circuit.
